This work is a unique record of life in Victorian and Edwardian Poole as seen through the eyes of local amateur and professional photographers.
It contains 226 original photographs from the earliest days of photography to the eve of the Great War, depicting the move from mid-nineteenth century depression to Edwardian vitality. However, the charm of many of the scenes still does not disguise the real poverty which existed alongside middle-class gentility.
The photographs have all been researched individually by the authors and the text contains much information that has remained unpublished until now. The book is a 'must' for all those interested in tracing the character of Poole as it progressed from the 'Age of Sail' into the twentieth century.
