Art in Poole and Dorset
Philip Wilson Steer's splendid oil painting "Poole Harbour" set the scene for many decades of artistic activity in and around Poole. By the 1920's eminent painters, such as Augustus John, Henry Lamb and Bernard Gribble were living and working in the town. The presence of these artists gave great encouragement to the younger generation of local artists who, with the annual exhibitions of the Poole and East Dorset Arts Society (whose Chairman was Gerald Kelly, the President of the Royal Academy) and the Bournemouth Arts Club, made a virtual colony in Poole.
Peter Davies tells us of the lives and careers and evaluates the work of these artists who found inspiration in Dorset from the shores of Poole Harbour to the quays of Weymouth, and has illustrated his book with many examples of their work.
